Deputies: Man was shot 'because he's a sex offender'

9-22-15 California:

CITY OF SHASTA LAKE, Calif. - The Shasta County Jail has released the mugshot of a suspect who deputies said shot another man after learning he was a registered sex offender.

Timothy Gould, 28, was arrested Monday around 5:30 p.m. after officers had identified him as a suspect in an earlier shooting in the City of Shasta Lake.

According to a news release from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, the motive behind the shooting was due to the victim Roy Matagora, 62, being disliked because he is a registered sex offender.

The Megan's Law website for registered sex offenders showed Matagora was previously convicted of several charges including rape, and several charges relating to the sexual abuse of a person under the age of 18.

The shooting investigation revealed Matagora had been spending time with a woman in Shasta County, Tanna Curran, 25, during the week prior to the shooting. Investigators said Curran had been an acquaintance of Matagora's and she would borrow his vehicle and associate with him at his home.

Deputies said sometime Friday, Curran discovered that Matagora was a registered sex offender from other people who knew of Matagora's past. Curran and Gould looked at the Megan's Law website and saw Matagora was in fact listed as a registered sex offender.

Matagora was in the City of Shasta Lake, trying to recover his vehicle from Curran and Gould. While Matagora was at 5140 Main Street, deputies said Gould arrived and knocked on the door of the residence. Matagora opened the door and Gould reportedly fired at least two rounds from a .45 caliber handgun, striking Matagora in the left hand and left calf.

During the shooting investigation, detectives also learned that Gould and Curran were suspects in a firearm theft earlier in the day in the City of Redding prior to the shooting. The reported stolen firearm was a .45 caliber handgun.

Gould was booked into the Shasta County Jail for attempted murder. Curran was released. Detectives are conducting follow up and examining evidence to determine if additional charges will be filed against Gould, and if charges will be filed against Curran. ..Source.. by Kelli Saam

Redding man accepts plea deal for shooting sex offender

12-1-15:

REDDING, Calif. - A 28-year-old Redding man pleaded guilty in a Shasta County courtroom on Tuesday to attempted murder and use of a firearm in the September shooting of a registered sex offender.

According to the Shasta County District Attorney's Office, Timothy Joseph Gould will be sentenced to 15 years on Feb. 2, and has to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office said the motive behind the Sept. 19 shooting was due to the victim, Roy Matagora, 62, being a registered sex offender.

The Megan's Law website for registered sex offenders showed Matagora was previously convicted of several charges including rape, and several charges relating to the sexual abuse of a person under the age of 18.

Matagora opened the door and Gould reportedly fired at least two rounds from a .45 caliber handgun, striking Matagora in the left hand and left calf.

Matagora, and the other plaintiffs, are currently involved in a lawsuit against the state of California asking a judge to update the Megan's Law website immediately or to take it down entirely because it is putting registered sex offenders in danger. by Maghan Hunt
