AR- BCSO arrests man for identity theft

12-31-2005 Arkansas:

BENTON COUNTY - A routine traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a Siloam Springs man who allegedly stole more than $20,000 through credit-card and tax fraud, according to a news release from the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

Charles Robbins, an investigator with the BCSO Drug Interdiction Team, stopped Matthew Buescher, 35, on Wednesday. Buescher was initially arrested for driving on a suspended license.

When an inventory of the vehicle was done, Robbins discovered a backpack in the back seat. The backpack contained several file folders and credit cards with different names. The file folders contained personal identification information obtained over the Internet via University of Arkansas computers. The identification information was of people from Indiana who had either been convicted or accused of sexualrelated crimes. Another file contained credit-report information on several people.

After Buescher was taken to the Sheriff's Office, he told Criminal Investigation Division investigator Jeremy Felton he had obtained the personal information to apply for and receive bank accounts, including credit cards.

It was discovered in another file folder found in the backpack that Buescher had filed several false tax returns with the state of Iowa for the purpose of defrauding the government out of thousands of dollars in tax refunds. Those refund checks would be sent to vacant houses and picked up at a later time, or the funds would be deposited electronically into false bank accounts.

In all, Buescher indicated he stole around $20,000. Buescher also said most of the money was used for gambling in Oklahoma.

Buescher is being held in the Benton County Jail awaiting a bond hearing for the charge of financial identity fraud, a class C felony. The crime is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years and a $10,000 fine. ..more.. by Jennifer Turner Staff Writer jennifert@nwanews.

Law enforcement investigate sex offender calls

2-7-2007 North Dakota:
A Mandan man and a Morton County woman have reported receiving similar phone calls from a man claiming to be a sex offender living in Mandan. Morton County Sheriff Dave Shipman said the Mandan Police Department and the Morton County Sheriff's Department are conducting a joint investigation into the reports.

Mandan Deputy Police Chief Dennis Bullinger said a Mandan man living on the 900 block of Sixth Street Northwest reported to police that he had received a phone call around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, from a man claiming to be a registered sex offender who had moved into the neighborhood.

The caller told the man that he would not hurt him, but he advised him not to let his kids outside, Bullinger said. Bullinger said the man said the caller also claimed to be performing a sexual act on a child when he called.

The caller gave the man a name, but Bullinger said police have not found any record of a sex offender with such a name.

Shipman said a Morton County woman reported Monday that she received an almost identical call around 2 a.m. Saturday. The caller gave the same first name but not the same last name as in the Mandan case, Shipman said.

He said the caller told the woman he recently was released from prison, and police had told him to call everyone in the phone book to tell them he was in the community.

"And, obviously, we don't do that,"Shipman said.

People convicted of sex offenses are required to register as sex offenders with local law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement often release that information to the community through the media. However, sex offenders are not required to notify community members that they have moved into the area.

The man did not speak as graphically about sex offenses with the woman as he did with the Mandan man, Shipman said. Shipman said the same phone number appeared on the woman's caller identification system as the number that appeared on the Mandan man's caller identification system.

Law enforcement officials will use that information to determine where the call originated. Shipman recommends that anyone who receives a similar phone call report the incident to local law enforcement.

He said people should not erase the caller identification information, and they should call *69 immediately following such a call if they do not have caller identification.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Mandan Police Department at 667-3455, the Morton County Sheriff's Department at 667-3330 or Bismarck Area Crime Stoppers at 224-TIPS (224-8477). ..more.. by

Convicted sex offender arrested for address violation

2-2-2007 Oklahoma:
.A 7-News investigation this weekend led to the arrest of a convicted sex offender in Kiowa County. We showed you a disturbing Myspace web page Saturday night supposedly belonging to Richard Barret. He was convicted of lewd molestation in 1997. Following our 10-p-m newscast Saturday night, Snyder Police Chief Helena Cook informed us that Barrett was arrested for lying about where he was living. Oklahoma law requires that sex offenders tell local police where they live. Barrett claimed to live in Roosevelt, but when we stopped by the address he listed, his uncle told us Barrett was actually living in Snyder.

Chief Cooke says Barrett was taken into custody around midnight Sunday morning. She will present charges to the district attorney on Monday. She says Barrett still maintains that he did not create a Myspace web page containing statements about wanting to meet children. He believes someone else is impersonating him. On the page, it shows several of Barrett's prison mug shots. But most alarming, a statement, that reads quote, "I just got of prison for lewd molestation, and now I live in your town. Lock up the kids." We wanted know if Barrett really put this site up or if someboday is setting him up.

Chief Cook says over the past few days several people have contacted her with concerns about the site. Barrett tells her he doesn't own a computer or know what Myspace is. Only Myspace knows who sets up accounts. Chief Cook tells us she contacted Myspace to ask them to take the page down and they haven't responded to her. "It will continue to happen until Myspace comes up with a way to resolve it. Like I said it's not the first time. It's happened numerous times. We do the best that we can do to try to ensure the safety to our community, which is what we have done in this case," says Cook. ..more.. : by KSWO
