Setting fire to sex offender’s home nets prison

7-22-2014 Wisconsin:

Two men accused of setting fire to a mobile home of a registered sex offender in the town of Gardner last fall have been convicted in Door County Circuit Court.

T.J. Robert Hunt, 25, Sturgeon Bay, was given three years in state prison and seven years of extended supervision by Judge Peter Diltz on July 14 for arson, party to a crime.

On Nov. 2 the corner of a mobile home was doused with gasoline where Jason H. Johnson, 40, was living and asleep at the time. Johnson, who had been convicted in Michigan in 2009 of second-degree sexual assault, had recently moved into the home in the neighborhood where Hunt and Baker lived.

Johnson awoke to the smoke, and the fire was put out by the Brussels, Union, Gardner Fire Department. No one was injured, and Johnson continues to live in the town of Gardner.

Hunt pleaded no contest to the arson charge on April 10. Other charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, second offense; first-degree recklessly endangering safety, party to a crime; and obstructing an officer were dismissed.

He was also given 20 days in jail for operating with a restricted controlled substance, second offense. Ten days of the sentence are stayed if he attends a victim impact panel. His driver’s license was revoked for 13 months, and he was ordered to obtain an alcohol or drug assessment and comply with treatment recommendations. He is also to pay restitution together with Baker and complete any counseling or programs recommended. Costs total $2,883.

Hunt’s accomplice, Justin S. Baker, 26, Sturgeon Bay, was sentenced April 29 for his part in the crime, but Baker’s arson charge was dismissed. Baker was convicted of first-degree recklessly endangering safety. His sentence withheld and he was given one year in jail with three months stayed and three years probation. He was also ordered to perform 75 hours of community service, maintain full-time employment, obtain an alcohol and other drug abuse assessment, and maintain absolute sobriety. Costs total $1,258. Both men were ordered to have no contact with Johnson.

After the Nov. 2 arson case, Baker was charged in another case for causing injury as a snowmobiler while intoxicated on Dec. 20. Baker was the driver when a 21 year-old passenger was injured after he crashed into a tree in the town of Nasewaupee. He pleaded no contest April 29 in that case and was given an additional 30 days in jail. His sentence was withheld, and he was given one year of concurrent probation for bail jumping. Costs total $1,274. ..Source.. by Ramelle Bintz
