In Response to Readers Comments: To understand why this is classified as vigilantism you need to see our definition of vigilantism. Accordingly, here we have someone (Roberts) who has taken the lives of the family of a former sex offender (Stevens), and shot him as well. We do not know why Roberts did that, therefore we classify that as a "vigilante act." The fact that Roberts apparently was hiding from police (or that Roberts was married to one of Stevens Kin [reason for Roberts living with the Stevens family]) does not change the fact that we do not know why Roberts killed the Stevens family (the vigilante act). The only exception in our definition of "Vigilantism" is, if Roberts was the victim of Steven's original sex crime, and the article does not make that connection. (YES, this was a difficult case to classify, and forced us to review our definition as well)

Four Shot, Killed In West Union Home

WEST UNION, Ohio -- Bocephus Stephens wishes Randle Roberts hadn't been killed in a gunfight with Columbus police Saturday morning.

If Roberts were alive, Stephens said, he might be able to find out why Roberts shot Stephens' father, wife, sister and daughter to death in their West Union home.

West Union police said that 33-year-old Kendra F. Stephens, 67-year-old George Stephens, 40-year-old Sonja Stephens and 11-year-old Harley Stephens were shot and killed sometime early Saturday.

Another daughter, 8-year-old Mariah Stephens, told police she awoke to find her family shot to death. She heard nothing as she slept because Roberts placed earplugs in her ears, investigators said.

After the slayings, investigators said Roberts stole a sport utility vehicle and a car before getting into a chase and gunfight with Columbus police that left him dead and three officers wounded.

Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak wouldn't say how many times Roberts was hit but said he was shot in the head, torso and extremities.

Stephens told News 5's Amy Wagner that Roberts was married to a relative of his and was staying with Stephens' family while he got back on his feet.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe is pressing ahead with a felony assault charge that could put a paraplegic grandfather in the slammer for up to 10 years for whacking his 3-year-old granddaughter’s alleged molester with a Louisville slugger after setting a trap for his arrest.

As a result of 57-year-old Martha’s Vineyard computer salesman Frank Hebert’s unconventional citizen’s arrest, Joshua A. Hardy, 27, of Middleboro, now faces child molestation charges in a second case out of Wareham involving another little girl, authorities tell the Herald.

“I’m not a hero, that’s for damn sure,” Hebert, his voice cracking, said last night. “I’d do it again tomorrow, knowing the consequence. I didn’t have a choice. A 10-year-old kid could take me. This is not about me. This is about a tiny child. I would never tell her I took a risk for her. I’d tell her I loved her.”

Hebert, left confined to a wheelchair with only partial use of his arms after a car crash in Falmouth a decade ago, was summonsed to Edgartown District Court on March 25 and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He said he was advised by a judge to get an attorney and is due back in court May 2 for a pretrial conference.

Court roundup: Man charged with stabbing cellmate

4-30-2011 Washington:

PASCO -- A convicted wife killer has been charged with stabbing his cellmate in Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, reportedly because the man is a sex offender.

John Robert Spicer, 49, is set for trial June 22 in Franklin County Superior Court on one count of second-degree assault. He has pleaded innocent.

The allegations stem from a Jan. 25, 2010, incident at the Connell prison, where Spicer and Sammy Stephens shared a cell in the new addition.

Spicer has been locked up since January 2002 for a second-degree murder conviction with a firearm enhancement out of Pend Oreille County, according to a Washington Department of Corrections spokeswoman. He shot his wife in April 2001 after reportedly waking up mad.

Stephens, 33, is at Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen. He was readmitted to prison in October 2010 for failing to register as a sex offender in Clark County.

According to court documents, the two offenders were leaving their cell when Spicer grabbed Stephens from behind and stabbed him in the back of the neck with a knife-like weapon. Stephens broke free and ran down the stairs in their pod, with Spicer in pursuit, documents said.

That exchange was caught on video surveillance, with the two men going out of view as Spicer continued to follow while still allegedly holding the weapon in his right hand. Footage then shows him walk to a trash can and throw away the weapon, court documents said.

Sex Offenders Say They Are Harassed, Others Not Sympathetic

A registered sex offender says he's being harassed at his home, because people know his past.

"They chipped off the paint, there's two dents right there," said Heather, showing KARK the marks in her home.

Preferring to be referred to only as Heather, Saturday she says someone shot up her home off Crystal Hill Road with a BB gun

"This is a last Hail Mary effort, I hope it doesn't keep happening. It scares me and it scares my neighbors and friends," she said.

Heather says this, and other harassment, has happened before: all because her roommate is a registered sex offender.

"I think they are targeting sex offenders, every time the notification fly-er goes out, they target whichever trailer they think is where the person lives," she said.

In this area, there are more than a half a dozen sex-offenders. Each time one moves in, local law enforcement has to let the neighborhood know.

"It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen," said Lt. Minden.

Lt. Carl Minden with the Pulaski County Sheriff's office says retaliation isn't what the registry is intended for and in fact, is potentially criminal.

"Obviously they did commit a crime, as a sex offender, but they still have rights as a citizen and you have to respect their rights or you'll be breaking the law and you won't be any better than them," he said.

That's why they're investigating what happened at Heather's home.

Still, she's worried someone is taking the law into their own hands.

"That's what worries me is that someone is going to come out here with more than a BB gun and mischief on their mind," she said.

But nearby neighbor Marley Benefield sees things differently. With three young daughters, she wouldn't retaliate, but she's not exactly sympathetic.

"They weren't being very sympathetic when they did what they did," she said.

Heather didn't want us to give out exact information about her, her home or roommate, fearing more retaliation.

The notification fly-ers actually have a warning on them against taking revenge.

Victim of vigilante mob sues Philly police

3-23-2011 Pennsylvania:

PHILADELPHIA, March 22 (UPI) -- A man attacked by a mob who wrongly believed he had raped an 11-year-old girl has sued Philadelphia police, saying they encouraged street justice.

Michael Zenquis, 28, who filed a federal civil rights lawsuit Tuesday, names both the city and the police department as defendants, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.

Zenquis said he was beaten after police released a tip from an anonymous caller about a man nicknamed "Romeo," a name applied to him because of his voice. He ended up in the hospital after being hit with a baseball bat, a plank and fists.

"Not only was he beaten up by a bunch of civilians who jumped him out of the clear blue sky, he was also identified as a rapist and not just a rapist, but a child rapist," Zenquis' lawyer, Jonathan Feinberg, said. "He was labeled as this monster criminal with no basis whatsoever."

A day after Zenquis was attacked, another group of people surrounded a suspect, Jose Carrasquillo, who had been named as a "person of interest," beat him and held him for police. Carrasquillo is now serving a 30- to 66-year prison sentence.

Two of Zenquis' alleged attackers were arrested, and the father of the 11-year-old later apologized to him, while thanking the crowd that beat Carrasquillo. ..Source.. UPI.com

HOPEWELL _ A 20-year-old man accused of trying to run over a convicted sex offender as he fled on a moped entered a plea today that calls for no additional jail time, an agreement that was angrily denounced by the victim.

Daniel R. Narron of Hopewell pleaded guilty in Hopewell Circuit Court to attempted unlawful wounding, a felony, and to disorderly conduct and hit and run, both misdemeanors.

Approving the terms of the agreement, Judge Samuel E. Campbell sentenced Narron to five years for the felony and 12 months for each misdemeanor charge, but the judge suspended all of the jail time. Narron, who has spent about 11 months in jail, was expected to be released today.

Also today, three co-defendants entered pleas to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and failure to report an accident. Each was convicted and told the charges would be dismissed after one year if the defendants remain on good behavior.

Those defendants are Damon J. Silvestro of Colonial Heights and Eric B. Harris and Thomas W. McCall, both of Hopewell.

After today’s proceedings, the victim in the case, Rudolph Ellis, 54, criticized the plea agreement for Narron, saying, “I was running for my life. That young man tried to kill me. This whole thing is a joke.”

Ellis also excoriated the Hopewell Police Department, saying they refused to pursue an investigation and that officers had harassed him.

Hopewell Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Newman said after the hearing that he turned over the investigation to Virginia State Police because “the police department didn’t do anything.”

Wayne County family posts sex offender warning signs after claiming neighbor attacked their child

6-21-2011 Ohio:

RITTMAN, Ohio - They are warning signs that have caused quite a stir in the usually quiet town of Rittman.

The signs read, "Beware, a sex offender lives close." Some residents are extremely upset about the signs, urging city officials to have them taken down.

The signs were made out of large pieces of plywood and spray paint by concerned father Mike Sayre.

Sayre made the signs six weeks ago, after he claimed his 8-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by a neighbor. But some residents living near Sayre's home said the signs are creating a panic and are damaging to property values.

"I'm just trying to protect my kids, and other children in the neighborhood," said Sayre. "My signs are 100 percent legal. I don't name anybody, it's a public warning."

Still, some neighbors have turned to the Chippewa Township Trustees, who are now trying to determine if the warning signs are a violation of any township regulations.

Rachelle Sayre supports her husband and the signs posted in all parts of their front and backyard.

"We're trying to warn them, we don't want this to happen to their children," said Sayre. "He could do this to any child in this neighborhood.

5 On Your Side contacted the Wayne County Prosecutor's office, and it has pledged to increase the number of resources committed to the ongoing investigation.

The neighbor involved in this case has been questioned by the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, but has not been charged.

Wayne County Children Services is also looking into the case, and is helping the Sayre family with counseling.

The Chippewa Township Trustees still aren't sure if the signs will need to come down.

Man Sentenced For Offering Bounty For Daughter's Beau

Domingos Oliveira Offered $3,000 For Sex Offender Sean Kirk 'Dead Or Alive'

EL CAJON, Calif. -- A Spring Valley man who put up posters offering a $3,000 "dead or alive" bounty on his daughter's boyfriend, a registered sex offender, was sentenced Monday to seven years and four months in state prison.

Domingos Jose Oliveira, 49, was convicted last month of solicitation of murder and making a criminal threat against 33-year-old Sean Kirk, along with a hate crime allegation. Jurors deadlocked on a threat charge against the defendant's 20-year-old daughter, Samantha.

"This is a self-controlling father," Deputy District Attorney Curtis Ross told Judge William McGrath.

The prosecutor said Oliveira showed no remorse and told a probation officer that others were to blame for the bounty and threats against Kirk, who is black.

"He's still concerned about his safety," Ross said of the victim. "This was an attempt to have Mr. Kirk killed."

Ross said Oliveira was more than just a concerned parent, having his daughter sign a death contract saying that if she dated a black man, she and that person would be killed.

Oliveira wasn't even aware that Kirk was a registered sex offender until several months into the threats, Ross said.

McGrath said Oliveira had been law-abiding since a domestic violence and drug conviction 21 years ago, but "reoffended in an extraordinary way."

The judge said the defendant's actions were motivated by a racial bias and an attempt to control his daughter.

A young black Marine who also dated Samantha Oliveira testified that the defendant also harassed him.

McGrath called the defendant's actions "completely wrong."

"It was not done on a whim," the judge said. "He (Oliveira) knew what he was doing was serious stuff."

Defense attorney Michael Earle told reporters that Oliveira was a concerned father who, in his own way, was trying to do what was best for his daughter.

The attorney said Oliveira was remorseful, but not as remorseful as the court wanted to see.

"I think in his mind he was doing what was best for his daughter," Earle told reporters. "From his standpoint, it's difficult to be remorseful when you're trying to do the best thing for your kid. Whether it's right or wrong, to him it was the correct call to protect his daughter."

Kirk told police he received numerous threatening emails and text messages while dating the defendant's daughter earlier this year.

The victim said he was in class at Grossmont College when a teacher told him there were posters all over campus marked "dead or alive" and pointing out that he was a sex offender. Kirk admitted to being a registered sex offender, saying he pleaded guilty to having sex with a girl he thought was 18.

Samantha Oliveira testified that her father was a racist and often made threats against her black boyfriends.

The defendant was arrested the morning of March 25 at his home, several hours after a search warrant was served at the Roadside Place residence. La Mesa police said they found the wanted poster on the defendant's computer. ..Source.. by 10News.com

Proposed Oklahoma law could force some sex offenders in a mobile home park to move into tents

If the Gov. signs this bill, and it is likely she will, this places the public MORE AT RISK and there isn't a single reason why it should be done. The latest lawmaker effort DOES NOT resolve a problem, it CREATES additional problems, and for that reason alone she should not sign the bill. She ought to force lawmakers to resolve the problem not create further problems. Actions such as this are nothing more than Legislative Vigilantism!

There isn't a single study to show that, allowing former offenders to live together is bad, but there is a study showing that, to do so is actually good because offenders monitor each other (Colorado's "Shared Living Arrangement" study), and former offenders want those that violate the shared principle OUT! i.e., they turn them in to authorities.

4-30-2011 Oklahoma:

The Oklahoma House and Senate this week passed Senate Bill 852, closing a loophole used by Hand Up Ministries to house multiple registered sex offenders in its 69 mobile homes and 50 travel trailers in south Oklahoma City. The measure is awaiting approval from Gov. Mary Fallin.

Carol Barber came to Hand Up Ministries five years ago out of prison with no money, no job and no place to lay his head.

He was a middle-age, registered sex offender, having been convicted in 1998 of molestation and attempted rape.

Barber, 64, lives in a mobile home park operated by Hand Up Ministries in south Oklahoma City. The park is being targeted by legislation intended to limit the number of sex offenders living there, but it might inadvertently turn it into a tent city.

“I had nothing and no place to go right out of prison,” Barber said. “No one wants a sex offender living next door to them, but where are we supposed to be? We have this place to help us, and now the politicians want to take it away from us.”

About 250 sex offenders live in the 14-acre park at 2130 SE 59.

6 plead guilty to beating man with hammer

4-20-2011 Pennsylvania:

A Latrobe woman, her mother and four men pleaded guilty on Friday to charges they broke into a man's home and beat him with a claw hammer.

Police said Felisha Hardison, 25, told her mother and a group of men that she was raped by 25-year-old Cody Wightman. That report led to their driving to Wightman's home, kicking in his door, punching and kicking him and finally hitting him with a claw hammer.

In court yesterday, Hardison, along with Brian Lehman Jr., Justin Libengood, Steven M. Kozemchak, Daniel Robert Chew Jr. and Hardison's mother, Judith Lundgren, pleaded guilty to charges related to the April 18, 2010, incident.

According to court records, police said Hardison and her mother picked up the men and drove them to Wightman's home. The women sat in a minivan during the assault and were charged as accomplices.

"(Wightman's) injuries were limited to a cut on his head that required some stitches, and some bruises," said Assistant District Attorney Chris Flanigan, who recommended plea bargains for each of the defendants.

Hardison pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, burglary and aggravated assault, and to charges of filing a false report with police in which she alleged she was sexually assaulted by another man.

Man gets 13 years in prison for robbing gas station, attacking sex offender

Schizophrenic who came after man with a sledgehammer in crime spree is sentenced

A registered sex offender who was attacked in Grover Beach by a schizophrenic last year forgave his assailant at a sentencing Monday and said he would visit him in prison.

David Jordan Griffin, 25, was sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading no contest to robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary charges in connection with a two-day crime spree last year that targeted two men who were on the state’s sex-crime website.

Griffin’s sentence, handed down by Judge Hugh Mullin in San Luis Obispo Superior Court, included a conviction for an attack with a sledgehammer April 22, 2010, on 58-year-old Frank Lindsay. Griffin tracked down Lindsay from the Megan’s Law sex offender list.

“I forgive you, David,” Lindsay said in court, directing his comments to Griffin. “You will get better.”

Griffin came after Lindsay with the hammer after breaking into his home. Lindsay fought against him and escaped serious injury.

Lindsay and Griffin’s mother, Lea Ann Heath of Shelter Cove, also have made peace, they’ve said, and she has apologized to Lindsay for the incident.

The same day as his attack on Lindsay, Griffin went to the home of another man on the Megan’s Law sex offender list and tried to break down his door unsuccessfully while swearing at him.

A day later, on April 23, Griffin carried a machete into a Chevron at 1284 Grand Ave. and stole money and lottery tickets.

While attempting to flee, Griffin backed a car toward police, one of whom shot him in the leg.

Griffin has no prior criminal record, and his mental illness “significantly reduced his culpability for the crime,” his probation report states.

“My son was never a bad guy, never aggressive,” Heath said. “But six months before this happened, he started showing signs of paranoia. He bought into conspiracy theories.”

Heath said she didn’t know the extent of her son’s illness and encouraged him to live with his uncles in Grover Beach to have male role models and look for work in a more populated area than their isolated hometown in Humboldt County, where he was unemployed.

Griffin’s attorney, Gael G. Mueller, said that her client was seriously ill. She hopes he gets proper psychiatric treatment in prison.

“He was diagnosed as actively schizophrenic and paranoid,” Mueller said. “I see these events as all part of one episode where his brain was telling him all sorts of bizarre things.”

Mueller called Lindsay an “amazing guy” for going out of his way to meet with her client and to try to help him.

Lindsay said outside court Monday that he’ll be there for Griffin “wherever and whenever” he needs him.

Lindsay added that he has visited Griffin in County Jail several times.

“It wasn’t easy for either one of us,” Lindsay said. “When he first saw me he was definitely alarmed and had hatred in his eyes. I think it took us both awhile to get to a place where we were comfortable.”

Lindsay said leading up to the attack, one of his biggest fears was being targeted as a sex offender — a lewd act with a child under 14 that didn’t involve intercourse and which he committed more than 30 years ago.

But regardless of his efforts to keep his name off the Megan’s Law website, his fears became a reality.

“I stepped out of bounds, but I have completed my sentence conditions and probation to the court’s wishes,” Lindsay said. “I pleaded no contest with the understanding the case would be dismissed. I don’t think it’s right that I’m a potential target (on the Megan’s Law list).” ..Source.. by The Tribune

Police: Hazelwood man attacked sex offender with hammer, claimed he was doing 'God's work'

8-11-2011 Missouri:

A Hazelwood man accused of approaching his neighber, a registered sex offender, to borrow some sugar, then attacking the man with a hammer, told police afterwards that he was "doing God's work" in trying to get rid of sexual predators.

John Joseph Huffmaster, 29, of Riderwood Drive in Hazelwood, was charged this week in St. Louis County with first-degree assault and armed criminal action

Hazelwood police Capt. Greg Hall said that at about 6 a.m. on June 16, Huffmaster went across the street to the home of a 74-year-old neighbor under the guise of asking to borrow some sugar.

When the man agreed to give him the sugar, Huffmaster walked inside the house with a hammer and started attacking him, police said.

Huffmaster then called police and told them that the man was molesting a child and that he had gone there to stop it, Hall said.

Police arrived but didn't find a child there. They did find the 74-year-old man inside his home, semi-conscious and bleeding. He had multiple skull and facial fractures, according to court documents.

Hall said Huffmaster has a history of "behavioral disorders" but would not provide details. They found him at his own home across the street.

The sex offender's listing on the Missouri Sex Offender registry says he has a conviction for sexually abusing a 11-year-old girl in 1991.

Mom: I Shot Apt. Of Man Who Sexually Assaulted My Child

Tarrara Garcia, Khanh Tran Arrested By Weld County Investigators

KERSEY, Colo. -- A 25-year-old Greeley mother is accused of firing 27 bullets into an apartment complex to shoot the man she believes sexually assaulted her son on Christmas Day, according to an incident report.

A grandmother called Greeley Police on Christmas night and said her grandson had been sexually assaulted.

A police officer said he took the boy and his mother, Tarrara Garcia, to the Medical Center of the Rockies for an exam. The officer said on the way to the hospital, Garcia asked if she could borrow his duty rifle "because she wanted to go shoot the person who touched her son," according to the incident report obtained by 7NEWS.

Four days later, on Dec. 29, witnesses said someone drove by the Sandy Knolls Apartments in Kersey and opened fire into a second floor apartment window.

A 50-year-old man was hit in the leg and in the hip. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police interviewed Garcia's friend, Khanh Tran. He told police Garcia called him on Dec. 29 and asked him to meet her. Tran told police he felt Garcia was going to go stab the person accused of sexually assaulting her son, according to the incident report.

Garcia asked Tran to wait for her, and when she returned, Tran said she had a gun with her and that she said she "saw him through the window and 'shot him,'" according to the incident report.

Inmate cuts throat of another in shaving incident

2-13-2012 Louisiana:

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating an incident Friday at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison when one inmate cut another inmate’s throat with a razor, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

The victim told deputies inmate Dustin Musso, 31, agreed to shave the victim’s neck while Musso stood inside a cell and the victim stood outside it, Casey Rayborn Hicks said.

She did not identify the victim.

Deputies had given the victim a razor because it was time for inmates to shower and perform general hygiene. The victim was supposed to return the razor when he was finished, Hicks said. But instead, the victim gave the razor to Musso so Musso could shave him.

Hicks said she did not know why the victim agreed to be shaved.

Home of embattled former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky vandalized

Cinder block thrown through window of Jerry Sandusky's home

Twenty-four hours after Penn State students rioted in the State College streets following the ouster of football coaching legend Joe Paterno, the home of Paterno’s former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, was reportedly vandalized Thursday evening.

According to the Patriot-News of Harrisburg, Pa., two pieces of cinder block were tossed through the windows of Sandusky’s State College home. The 67-year-old disgraced coach has been charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse against minors over a 15-year period.

An NBC report said that Sandusky was not home at the time, and that the State College Police have no suspects. A plastic bag covered one of the windows, according to several reports.

The sex scandal that has rocked the campus resulted in Paterno’s firing, as well as that of university president Graham Spanier. Inverness man pleads guilty to attacking man who molested relative

10-3-2011 California:

An Inverness man pleaded guilty today to aggravated battery in an attack on Donald Culver, a former Lake Zurich High School teacher who admitted molesting a relative of the Inverness man.

To protect the identity of the molestation victim, the Daily Herald is not naming the defendant, who pleaded guilty to a class 3 felony punishable by two to five years in prison. Probation is also available.

Cook County Judge Hyman Riebman sentenced the 49-year-old defendant to 24 months probation and 240 hours of community service. Riebman also ordered the defendant to undergo drug and alcohol evaluation and submit to any recommended treatment. The judge also ordered the defendant to participate in anger management counseling and to have no contact with Culver.

Culver, who taught English and drama at the school for eight years, pleaded guilty to the charges against him in August and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Prosecutors say the defendant burst into Culver’s home in late January and threatened to kill him, claiming Culver had ruined the relative’s life. During an earlier hearing, prosecutors said the man struck Culver in the head with a small caliber revolver and put the barrel in Culver’s mouth.

ARWICH - The Harwich Police Department has issued a Level 3 Sex Offender community notice for an individual now living at 602 Queen Anne Road in Harwich. Cory N. Whitehead, 33, was convicted of three counts of rape and abuse of a child in 2001, according to police.

Whitehead is a white male, 6'01", 208 lbs, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

According to the SORB, Whitehead is currently employed in Bourne.

Whitehead has been designated a Level 3 Sex Offender by the Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB). The Board has determined that this individual is at a high risk to re-offend and that the degree of dangerousness posed to the public is such that a substantial public safety interest is served by active community notification.

According to the Harwich police, Whitehead is one of four Level 3 Sex Offenders living in Harwich.

Last Wednesday, an unknown suspect threw a Molotov cocktail through a bedroom window at the home at 602 Queen Anne Road. Police are currently investigating the incident. Sex Offender Assaulted During Home Invasion

7-16-2011 Texas:

CORPUS CHRISTI - Police are still looking for a second suspect in connection with a early morning home invasion on the southside of Corpus Christi.

There is a trail of blood outside the home of 41-year-old Daniel Villarreal in the 3800 block of Los Arroyos.

Villarreal, who is a registered sex offender, told police when he got home from work he found two men inside his house who attacked him.

Villarreal was taken to the hospital with some facial injuries while police arrested 27-year-old Jay Benavides at the scene.

He's been charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit further felonies.

The second suspect allegedly stole Villarreal's car, but abandoned it a block away.

Washington state man sentenced for shooting a man he thought was a sex offender

7-13-2011 Washington:

SPOKANE, Wash. — A Washington state man who shot another man in the head because the shooter mistakenly thought the victim was a sex offender has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison on assault and gun convictions.

Robert Startin cried in Spokane County Superior Court as he apologized for shooting 26-year-old Shane Reilly at a drinking party in March in Spokane Valley.

The prosecutor said someone joked that Reilly was a sex offender. Startin had a relative who was molested. He got a gun and shot Reilly in the head.

The Spokesman-Review reports Reilly was paralyzed below the neck but has recovered some movement in his limbs. He’s still in the hospital.

Woman charged after damaging security cams at sex offender's house

5-31-2011 Ohio:

HENRIETTA TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - A Lorain County woman arrested after damaging security cameras at the home of a former registered sex offender.

Annette Osborn is charged with criminal damaging.

Lorain County Sheriff's Deputies tell 19 Action News she ripped the cords off the cameras at Henry Bennett's home on State Route 113.

Bennett is a convicted sex offender out of California who no longer has to register with the Sheriff's office.

Osborn was convinced his cameras pointed towards her house, which is behind Bennett's.

However, when deputies looked at Bennett's laptop, they determined that was not true and the cameras were only pointed towards his backyard. ..Source.. by 19 Action News
